Firsts produce nervous batting display in tough conditions

Overnight rain on the eve of the new cricket season wiped out many games across the divisions and through the firsts game into doubt. However, the game eventually began with a delayed start and reduced to 34 overs per side. Ovington were asked to bat first on what could be described as a typical April wicket. Bilton’s decision to bowl first showed immediate dividends by taking a wicket in the second over before Ovington had scored a run. Ovington scored steadily but regular loss of wickets prevented any real acceleration of the run rate. Only Tom Cookson (35 from 45) and Tom Irwin (33 from 55) made notable contributions with the innings finishing on 140-9 from 34 overs.

Bilton recover from early loss of wickets

In response, Bilton had a minor collapse, being reduced to 25-5. Dom Kitching doing most of the damage (4-27). At this point, Bilton looked in deep trouble but a well-managed innings by Will Bartlett (70) along with support from Tim Lambert saw them over the line with 4 overs to spare.

U15s victorious against York

Our U15 team welcomed York B in a chilly affair on the Little Knavesmire. York B batted first and posted the respectable score of 98-4 from 16 overs. With the wickets being shared between Harry Eckersley-Wilson (1-15), Spencer Fern (2-2) and Noah Goffarth (1-24). Spencer Fern was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 wickets for 2 runs in a 3 overs spell.

Lucas Moore spearheaded the Ovington reply by scoring 50* from 42 balls. Ovington chased down the runs in what turned out to be comfortable run chase, exceeding the target with 3 overs to spare.

Plenty of action to come this weekend

The firsts will look to get their first win of the campaign against Easingwold seconds, a team we recorded two wins against in the 2022 season. The season commences for our other two teams in the York Vale League, with our seconds playing against Stockton and Hopgrove CC on the LIttle Knavesmire, and our thirds visiting Thorpe Willoughby CC.
