Season Preview and Club Day (06/04/24)

Season Preview and Club Day (06/04/24)

Another season of cricket is almost upon us and everyone at Ovington Cricket Club is ready and raring to go. Winter nets have been successfully negotiated, the ground is finally drying out and The Little Knavesmire is abuzz with the drone of lawnmowers/groundsmen.

For any new people interested in joining us in one way or another, we have three weekend teams playing at a variety of levels from the competitive standard of our first team to the more social standard that our third team enjoy. We also have a midweek team that plays on Wednesday evenings. Our junior section runs teams from U15 level down to U9 as well as the ever popular All Stars and Dynamos sessions catering for every potential cricketer aged 5 and up.

If you are interested in joining the club in a non playing capacity then we are always looking for people to help us by Umpiring or Scoring. The club will help with any training and qualifications that you want or need and there is no minimum commitment required. Any help would be gratefully received.

Alternatively, why not come down to The Little Knavesmire on a summer Saturday afternoon and enjoy the cricket that is on display.

On the playing side of things, as with any season there are players who have moved on to other things but we are delighted to welcome plenty of new members in their place and we are excited to see how they fare when the season gets going. Some things never change though, Andrew Tomlinson still enjoys a pleasant stroll around the racecourse on a Saturday morning, Tom Armes is still not allowed on the really big rides at Alton Towers and Dick Buckley still is yet to experience the pleasure of what it feels like to spin a cricket ball.

Speaking of Tom Armes, this season he is taking on the role of first team captain. In turn, Benji Busby drops down to captain the second team, a role he last held back in the care free and innocent days of 2016 and Dave Warner continues his ruthless, win at all costs regime as third team skipper.

Matches proper kick off for all three teams on Saturday 20th April with some friendlies taking place on the weekend of the 13/14 April

Finally, there is an important Club Day full of football, fun and frivolity taking place on

SATURDAY 6TH APRIL

We have booked a 5 a side football pitch from 15:00-17:00 at York Sports Village which will be free and open to all. Please come along and enjoy yourselves and we hope to see as many people there as can make it.

But there’s more.

Join us in the evening for a few drinks and a curry at Lal Quila on Bishy Road at 19:30ish (exact time TBC). Again, this is open to everyone and we hope you can make it.

And that’s not all.

In the morning, from 09:00 onwards down at the club we will be doing the essential pre-season work building the cage, covers, sight screens etc. It is expected that you help out here in order to play footie later. Consider it payment. There will be cake at the club and please bring along your own goodies to share.

If you are interested in joining in any of the fun it would be helpful to indicate to the club or any of the captains (especially if you require a lift).

We hope to see as many people as possible on the 6th, 13th and 20th of April as well as all Saturdays after that throughout the summer.
